Day trips from Toronto that don't eat the whole day in traffic

Most day trip lists from Toronto ignore the one thing that decides whether the day is good: how long you'll sit on the QEW or the 401. A place two and a half hours away on a Saturday morning is a long drive with a short visit attached.

So we've picked destinations where you get at least five or six useful hours, and told you when to leave. Travel times below are typical estimates without heavy traffic — Friday afternoons and summer Sunday evenings are reliably worse.

The rules that make a day trip work

  • Leave Toronto before 8:30 AM and head home before 4 PM, or after 7 PM. The hours in between are where day trips go to die.
  • Pick one place, not three. Adding a second stop usually costs more time than it gives.
  • Check whether GO Transit gets you there. Where it does, you get the day without driving home tired.
  • Book anything with limited capacity — wineries on weekends, the Niagara boat — before you go.

Six day trips worth the drive

Niagara-on-the-Lake

About 1.5 hours by car

Better than Niagara Falls for a full day: a walkable old town, wineries along the Niagara Parkway, and the falls a 25-minute drive away if you want to see them briefly. Rent bikes for the wine route rather than driving between tastings.

Elora and the Elora Gorge

About 1.5 hours by car

A small stone mill town above a limestone gorge. Walk the gorge trails in the morning, lunch in town, and add nearby Fergus if you have time. Best from late spring to autumn.

Hamilton's waterfalls

About 1 hour by car, or GO train

Hamilton has dozens of waterfalls along the Niagara Escarpment. Webster's and Tew's Falls are linked by a trail; Albion Falls is easy to reach. Finish on James Street North for dinner. Parking at popular falls is limited and sometimes reservation-only on weekends — check before you go.

Port Hope and Cobourg

About 1 hour by car, or VIA/GO

Two Lake Ontario towns with intact Victorian main streets and a sandy beach at Cobourg. Low effort, good for a slow summer day.

Collingwood and Blue Mountain

About 2 hours by car

Only worth it as a day trip if you're doing one specific thing — skiing, the scenic caves, or a hike on the Bruce Trail. Otherwise make it a weekend.

Stratford

About 2 hours by car

Built around the Stratford Festival (theatre runs roughly April to October). Matinee plus lunch is a very good day; without a show it's a pleasant town but a long drive.

Day trip

Old town, wine route and a glance at the falls

Everything is within about 25 minutes, so you spend the day there rather than between stops.

  1. 8:00 AM

    Leave Toronto

Roughly 1.5 hours via the QEW if you beat the traffic.

  2. 9:45 AM

    Coffee and Queen Street

The old town is quiet before the tour buses arrive.

  3. 11:00 AM

    Wineries on the Niagara Parkway

Two tastings is plenty; book weekend slots.

  4. 1:30 PM

Lunch at a winery or in town

  5. 3:00 PM

    Niagara Falls, briefly

About 25 minutes south. An hour at the falls is enough unless you take the boat.

  6. 4:30 PM

Head home or stay for dinner

Leaving after 7 PM usually avoids the worst of the QEW.
